(Senior) Kubernetes Platform Engineer (m/f/d) – Managed Services

  • Remote
    • Unterföhring, Bayern, Germany
  • Managed Services

Job description

Our Hetzner Cloud team consists of around 80 employees and works both remotely across Germany and from our office in Munich (Unterföhring).

We're the Managed Services team, the people behind the products we'd want to use ourselves. Our aim is to make Hetzner Cloud's powerful services more accessible still. We build turnkey managed solutions that take the complexity off our customers' hands, so they can get on with their own ideas. Innovation, usability and quality aren't buzzwords for us, they're the standard we hold our own work to.

At the moment we're developing our managed Kubernetes product, which builds on Hetzner's existing IaaS components. Those components are what we assemble into the clusters we'll be offering our customers. We're in the thick of building it, with a clear plan and launch ahead of us, so what you develop here is what will go into production later on. We look at Kubernetes firmly from the operator's point of view. Upstream, the project moves at considerable pace, and it's our job to keep upgrades, security patches and lifecycle work following on reliably and fully automatically across a great many clusters, without our customers noticing a thing. And since there's a Linux system underneath every cluster, sound Linux knowledge is inseparable from the work as far as we're concerned.

As a Kubernetes Platform Engineer (m/f/d) you'll see our product through from build to operation. Your focus will be the automated creation and operation of Kubernetes clusters, not as a user but as the person building and maintaining the platform underneath. If Kubernetes is something you're enthusiastic about, and you're equally at home in Linux below cluster level, we'd be glad to hear from you, even if you don't tick every box on our wish list.

This position includes an on-call rotation to maintain our services, which can be performed remotely within Germany.

The annual salary for this position is between €68,000 and €101,000 gross. The exact salary level will be determined based on professional experience and the scope of responsibilities.

Our stack in keywords: Kubernetes, Go, PostgreSQL, Kafka, Linux.

What you’ll do

  • You'll develop the services behind our managed Kubernetes product, bringing together Cloud Servers, Private Networks, DNS, Load Balancers and Volumes into finished clusters, from provisioning and node pools through to upgrades and rollouts

  • You'll work inside the Kubernetes components themselves, adapting the control plane, kubelet, networking and container runtime wherever our product calls for it

  • You'll build and maintain the operating system images for our clusters, lean, reproducible and with a dependable update path

  • You'll take our integrations further and contribute improvements back to the open source projects our product is built on

  • You'll take ownership of running your own services, including monitoring, observability and debugging when things go wrong

Job requirements

  • You write well-tested, production-ready Go

  • You know Kubernetes from more than the application side, you've got to grips with how the components work together, and you can make headway on problems that don't come with a ready-made answer

  • You've looked after Kubernetes clusters in production yourself, so you know from experience what makes a system operable

  • You're at home on Linux and happy to work a layer below the container when it's called for, with cgroups, namespaces, systemd, networking and storage

  • You are business fluent in English, German is a plus
